Cut rifling is using the exact same cutter in order to impart the spiraling grooves present within rifling.
Button rifling is utilizing multiple cutters cutting their own individual rifling grooves as it is either pulled or pushed through. Both types of rifling can produce match winning barrels, however the market currently favors cut rifled barrels. We believe this to be for multiple reasons. Button rifling requires an additional step in order to take out the stress out of the barrel from the button being pushed through. This is normally done by heating the barrel and can cause differences in hardness throughout the barrel if not done correctly. Another reason is the that the button has to be machined to higher tolerances in order to create rifling in which each groove matches each other. When using the cut method it is much easier to make a single cutter vs the multiple. We believe that substantially more effort is required in order to create a button rifle that is able to compete with cut rifled barrels because of the additional factors that must be taken care of in button process.
