Vortex Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 Review

7/2/2016

The vortex gen II scope is one of, if not the most popular scope for precision rifles currently here in 2016. We recently got our hands on two of them and have been running one on our custom 700.
First reaction
My initial reaction to this scope is that its heavy! at 48.5oz you feel it. It is by far the heaviest scope I have had on a gun.
Optical Quality
Clarity wise the scope is excellent. At over 700 yards you can clearly see grass and make out objects that you would be unable with lower tier optics. In comparison to my Bushnell DMR, the scope offers significantly better clarity at ranges beyond 300 yards.
Reticle
The ebr-2c reticle gives me all the features I want out of a tactical scope, without getting to busy. The reticle is clearly visible throughout the power ranges without washing out in the background.
Turrets
The vortex turrets offer rapid adjustment by having 10mils per rotation. Each .1 mil of adjustment can be felt without any excess focus. A complaint I have with the turrets are with the locking feature. It is quite difficult to pull up on the turrets to unlock them. With it being equally difficult to find the right spot to push down to lock the turret.
Tracking
The turret after doing a standard tracking test passes with flying colors. After doing a full rotation from 0 and back, there was no shift in impact. the shots tracked equivalent to their amounts. .5mils were .5 mils.
Illumination
I am not the biggest fan of illumination, it is my opinion that it adds unneeded cost to optics. However vortex implemented illumination that adds to the usability to the scope, while also not getting in the way. The illumination control fits into the parallax adjustment knob and does not add excess bulk. I still would prefer a cheaper liter scope without illumination in the end.
Finish
The grey finish is even and appears very high quality. When compared to other manufacturers the finish on the razor is quite robust. The scope has yet to have any ring marks after the three rifles i have mounted it on.
